BIGGEST CONTEST EVER! Colleen’s story.

This will be my last update on Colleen.  I met Colleen in July of last year when she was 12 weeks pregnant.  She won my ‘Biggest Contest Ever’, nutritional counseling throughout her pregnancy.  She is now blessed with a ten-week-old healthy baby girl.  I am happy to report that she and baby are doing fine.  She is exclusively breastfeeding and baby is sleeping well.  They are adjusting to their new life together wonderfully, with no issues at all.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank Colleen for having trust in me and sharing her story with you.  It has been a great pleasure to get to know her and follow along her prenatal journey.  I wish her and her family the best of health and true happiness.  XO

I have been invited by Lorene Sauro to take part in a blog tour. A game of blog tag, which seemingly has no beginning or end. I accepted, of course. What a fantastic idea!

The technical advances that we have made as human beings, the fact that I can type this in my home, and within seconds, send it out into the world to be read from any country truly amazes me still. I remember writing before owning a computer. I remember an elementary school field trip, to visit an author at a local book store. She showed us her manuscript, typed by a typewriter of the 80’s with round little keys so heavy it was like a workout for your fingers. I learned to type on one of those.  I wish I could remember who that author was, but in my mind, it was Judy Blume. At the time she was the only writer who mattered to me. Surely, it could not have been her. Or could it? Are you there Judy? It’s me, Karen.

I’m not sure why I wanted to be a writer back then. Maybe it was to create fantasy worlds for other girls like me to escape to, or maybe I thought all writers were rich and famous (like Judy Blume!) All I knew for sure is that I loved to read and I loved to write. It felt natural to me. I was compelled.

Unfortunately, I never became a best-selling author of children’s books, and never will. But, I do have my very own blog!

Now I am a holistic nutritionist and my writing subjects have evolved to nutrition and health. Specifically prenatal health and babies, because I feel it’s so very important to give our little ones the best start in life with proper nourishment.

1. What am I working on?

I am a regular contributor to the Canadian Military Family Magazine, a magazine for military families, written by military families. Yes, I am the proud wife to a member of the Canadian Forces. I am always adding fresh content to my own blog.  I am documenting the pregnancies of two contest winners.  Colleen has had her baby and Denise is expecting soon!  Most recently, I have started my first e-book.

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Every individual is unique in their own way. Just as nutritional needs vary from person to person, so does writing style and technique. I write from the heart about subjects that matter to me. I tell my own stories that I know from experience. When someone is reading my material, I hope they can feel the sincerity and truth in my words.

3. Why do I write what I do?

Words flow through me as though they are desperate to be heard. I have a life-long passion and need to write. It started as early as I can remember, writing stories in school about cats and horses. Over the course of my life, I have changed subject matter many times, but always wrote about what was most important to me at the time. Since becoming a mother, babies are dear to my heart, the most fragile and beautiful creatures on the planet. My desire is that new and expecting parents will read my stories or articles and relate on a personal level. I want to share my knowledge and expertise with my readers so that they can have happy and healthy children.

4. How does my writing process work?

This depends on what I’m writing about. If I’m writing in my own blog (this for example), I just sit down and start typing. The words somehow magically appear in my head and transform themselves onto my computer screen. Yes, it’s exactly like magic. When I’m writing something educational, like an article on the introduction of solid food for babies, obviously I do my research first. I usually think about it for a few days, while random ideas will pop in my head at the most inopportune moments (ie: while I’m driving). I write these down as soon as I can until I have a small collection. Then, I start digging into my resources, expanding my own knowledge on the subject at the same time. Once I have enough notes, I sit down at my computer and it all comes together. Of course I edit it at least a half dozen times before it’s complete. Then I will leave it for a day or two and come back to edit it once more.

April 16, 2014.  Week 4.  Day 24.  3 lbs down.

I need to step this up.  My new goal is 2 – 3 lbs per week.  I should reach my pre-pregnancy weight of 150 lbs by mid-July, if  not sooner.  I talked about my food choices in my last Youtube video and basically said that I’m not going to change the way I eat.  True, I eat well with treats in moderation.  Treats like chocolate, French fries, and yes, cheese.  If you saw the video you know that I made lasagna for dinner.  I ate that lasagna for three days in a row.  I like to prepare big meals that I can save for left-overs.  This way I don’t have to cook every day.  🙂

Well, maybe that ooey-gooey-yummy-lasagna came at a price.  Maybe it’s ok to eat cheesy pasta while ‘maintaining’ a healthy weight, but for a 2 – 3 lb weight loss I need to lose the cheese.  And probably the gluten too.

In fact, I’ll be preparing for a complete nutritional cleanse or detox in the next few days.  If you’re in the Rockland area, I would love to see you at my upcoming detox workshop.  To be perfectly clear, the purpose of a detox is not to lose weight.  It’s health benefits are so much more than that!  A detox will reduce your toxic load, resulting in an improved immune system and increased energy to name just a few.  Of course, by eliminating foods such as wheat and dairy, I’m sure to lose some extra pounds!
