Good Night Sleep Challenge

When was the last time you woke up feeling rested?  I mean, really rested.  So rested that you actually want to get out of bed and start your day.

My daughter has this energy first thing in the morning that is incredible.  She nearly jumps out of bed the moment she opens her eyes.  Always with a smile.  We should all feel that enthusiasm.  That excitement for life.  That energy.

The truth is, most of us do not get enough sleep.  According to this study, we average 6.1 sleeping hours each night.  A far cry from the the  recommended 7 to 9.  And we need those 7 to 9 hours sleep EVERY NIGHT.  Recent studies (source) suggest that a lack of sleep (less than 7 hours per night) may have wide-ranging effects on the cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, and nervous systems, including the following:

  • Obesity in adults and children
  • Diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance
  • Cardiovascular disease and hypertension
  • Anxiety symptoms
  • Depressed mood
  • Alcohol use

I have created this program because it became apparent to me that many women are not getting the quality sleep that they need for good health. This is a serious issue and I know we can do better!

I took Karen’s sleep challenge and found it made a difference in my life for a few reasons. It helped me live more consciously and do things differently since my awareness increased of the habits that were impeding my ability to sleep. Having an organized and methodical approach to changing behaviors that gradually changed my actions was far easier to implement than if I’d just done some research on my own and tried to change all these aspects at once. When Karen offered her sleeping program, I was desperate to fall asleep, stay asleep and wake refreshed. It really helped that Karen broke down the research into small steps. I was too sleep deprived to take on too many changes at one time. As the process went on, Karen would check in and see how we were doing, often recapping points in helpful lists. The beauty of Karen’s suggestions is that they led me to think about our lifestyle as a family and how it might be working against us.
